Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
United Labor Credit Union was founded in 1987 (23 years ago) as a non-profit financial cooperative, created for the sole purpose of serving the financial needs of members of Labor Union Locals and their families.
What is your primary product or service?
Personal financial services for Union households
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Unlike a bank, United Labor Credit Union is owned, operated and controlled by our members. Our objective is to give our members an opportunity to save for the future, make intelligent use of credit and use personal financial counseling to effectively manage their money. Because we are a not-for-profit, United Labor has no stockholders to satisfy. Therefore, we return any profits we make back to our members in the form of low-cost loans, higher dividends, better service with fewer fees and free financial education. Members take an active role in the credit union by electing fellow members to serve on the volunteer Board of Directors and other governing committees. Each member has one vote, regardless of how much money he or she may have on deposit.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
1 location at 63rd St. & Manchester Ave., in Kansas City, MO; free access to member accounts through online account access at UnitedLaborCU.org, and tens of thousands of CO-OP ATMs nationwide
Provide detailed directions to your location
Approximately 350 Highway and 63rd St. from the North and East, or I-435 & 63rd St. from the West and South; visit www.UnitedLaborCU.org for a map and driving directions from your location.
Which areas do you service?
Union households in Greater Kansas City and beyond
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
United Labor Credit Union is owned by its nearly 5,000 members, and operated by a volunteer Board of Directors who are all labor leaders from various crafts. The Credit Union oversight body is the Supervisory Committee. The Credit Committee, alongside the President, oversees lending aspects of the Credit Union.
ULCU is regulated by the National Credit Union Administration, a branch of the Federal government.
