Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Kansas City Shotokan Karate Club was started in 1966 by Jon Beltram and is affiliated with Shotokan Karate of America, America's oldest karate association, founded in 1955 by Tsutomu Ohshima.
What is your primary product or service?
We offer instruction in Shotokan Karate, the traditional Japanese system of unarmed self defense founded by Gichin Funakoshi, know as "The Father of Modern Karate" in the early 1900's. Shotokan Karate of America was started in 1955 by Tsutomu Ohshima, a student of Funakoshi.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Shotokan Karate of America is a not for profit educational institution dedicated to teaching traditional karate throughout the United States. We are a singularly non-commercial organization top to bottom. Although the Kansas City dojo does charge nominal monthly dues to defray a portion of upkeep and utility costs, instructors are unpaid. There are NO contracts and NO additional fees for testing. Instructors are highest level. At the present time, there are five instructors -- none have less than 15 years' teaching experience in Shotokan.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
There are currently three locations in the Kansas City area. The main dojo at 2026 Broadway plus a group at Longview Community College and a third group in Warrensburg, MO
What are your hours of operation?
